CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSADIO) -- Now that City Council has approved of Mayor Lori Lightfoot's transportation relief plan, which includes giving up to 50,000 prepaid gas cards of $150 and 100,000 prepaid transit cards of $50 to eligible residents across the city, many are wondering how they can take advantage of this opportunity.

Recipients of the gas and transit cards will be selected by lottery. Applications for the program known as Chicago Moves, opened on April 27 and cards will be distributed every month from May through September.

Those interested can apply online at Chicago.Gov/ChicagoMoves, in-person at any Chicago Public Library location, or fill out a paper application and mail it to the city's Department of Finance.

In order to be considered, applicants have to reside in Chicago, be at least 18 years old, and have a current and valid city sticker with correct mailing information for the vehicle if applying for a gas card.

Since the program is geared towards Chicagoans who need financial assistance, applicants must meet the income requirements depending on the size of their household. For example, the yearly income for a household of three can not exceed $83,900, in order to be eligible for the giveaway.

Details related to income eligibility and the application process as well as other pertinent information about the program can be found at https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/sites/chicago-moves/home.html.
