CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Leaders of various city departments held their annual “get ready for winter” press conference today, offering advice to residents.
The First Deputy Fire Commissioner, Mary Sheridan, warned against using stoves for heat. If your pipes freeze, she said don’t try to thaw them with an open flame.
Sheridan said space heaters need to be kept away from bedding and furniture and there’s this:
"Please assist us in keeping our fire hydrants clear. Minutes count."
Tom Carney, with the Department of Transportation reminded everyone of the law.
"Keeping Chicago 7,400 miles of sidewalks clear of snow and ice is everyone's responsibility," he said.
There have been fires.
"Refrain from bringing propane tanks to encampments to ensure the safety of the residents, outreach workers and others," said Mark Sanders with the Department of Family and support services.
Another bit of advice is to look out for one another including neighbors, pets, and friends especially the elderly and those with disabilities.
