Give your tender bulbs a second show. On this week's episode of the Gardening Tips podcast, the Chicago Botanic Garden's Jacob Burns talks about how to store your bulbs for the winter.

When the first frost blackens the foliage in fall, it's time to dig up those tender beauties, like dahlias, cannas, and gladiolas, to protect them from the winter.

Carefully lift the bulbs from the ground, brush off excess soil, and let them dry in a warm airy spot for a few days. Once dry, pack them in a box or container filled with peat moss, vermiculite, or sawdust, to balance moisture and prevent rot.

Store the bulbs in a cool dark place, around 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, such as a basement or garage. Check them occasionally throughout winter and remove any with mold or decay.

With this process, your tender bulbs will be ready to replant once spring arrives.
