(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A financial expert has some suggestions on how women can close the financial gender gap.

Christine Benz, Director of Personal Finance & Retirement Planning at Morningstar in Chicago tells the WBBM Noon Business Hour that women don't have to fall behind on their savings goals if they go part- time or leave the workforce to take care of children or an aging parent.

"Women tend to see their earnings peak earlier in life than men, so if women are earning, it's super important that they're turbocharging their retirement savings during those peak earnings years, which are earlier."

A bigger challenge, though, is finding your old salary after you return to a full-time job.

"This is super tough, and that is one reason why I would urge women to stay engaged in the workforce if they possibly can, even on a very part- time basis."
