CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Several hundred people gathered at Water Tower Place Sunday to protest the ongoing war in Ukraine, and they asked that the United States designate Russia as a terrorist state.

“Save the children,” protesters chanted. “Save the children.”

The protesters, mostly women and girls, held signs that read: “Rusia is a terrorist state;” “No Putin;” and “More weapons to Ukraine.”

Many held dolls with blood on them. Some held photos of children who had been killed in the war.

“My close family is here, but I still have a grandma and cousins [in Ukraine],” said one man at the rally. “We want to support Congress to [designate] Russia as a terrorist state.”

The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America's Illinois Division supported the action.

Recent reports have shown Russia has begun to target Ukraine’s main port of Odesa with cruise missiles. The port is known for shipping a large amount of grain.

On Twitter, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken wrote: “The United States strongly condemns Russia’ attack on the port of the Odesa today. It undermines the effort to bring food to the hungry and the credibility of Russia’s commitments to the deal finalized [Friday] to allow Ukrainian exports.”
