(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A house fire in Chicago’s West Pullman neighborhood killed an elderly man and left his wife hospitalized in very critical condition.

Clarence and Clementine Johnson, both in their 90s, were trapped in their home near 116th and Aberdeen after the fire broke out at about 3 p.m. Friday.

Firefighters found the man unconscious in the basement. He was later pronounced dead at Little Company of Mary.

His wife was also found unconscious. She was very critical with smoke-inhalation and burns at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

The cause of the blaze is not known yet.

The couple’s nephew, Sidney Johnson, was at the house after the fire.

He told CBS 2, “my heart is broken.  I can just imagine what they went through.”

Sidney Johnson said his aunt and uncle were very independent. They had been married for 64 years.
