People who use I-57 as part of their commute will see some changes starting next week -- as crews get closer to finishing work on the connection to the Tri-State Tollway.
The last part of the project includes finishing the ramps connecting the Tri-State to northbound I-57 as well as southbound I-57 to the tollway. A bridge that carries on I-57 over railroad tracks will be widened.
The acting chief engineer for the tollways Manar Nashif says I-57 will be reduced to one line in both directions approaching the Tri-State from midnight to 5 a.m. for up to three nights next week. He says that will allow workers to shift traffic in both directions on I-57 to the left to make room for the construction.
"So that'll be in place through the summer, and what we are doing is shifting traffic to the inside, so towards the inside of the roadway, and that will allow for bridge work to occur on the outsides," said Nashif.
He says I 57 and the TriState should be completely connected by the end of the year.
