(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Five people, all 19 years old and younger, are in custody after a police chase on Monday in Lake County, Ind.
It was just before 1 a.m. when Indiana State Police said a trooper saw a Kia traveling the wrong way on a street. The trooper tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the Kia kept going.
Police said the trooper pursued the Kia onto Interstate 80 and through an active construction zone. The drivers of the Kia tried to take a southbound exit ramp, but they crashed.
A records check through the Chicago Police Department showed the Kia was reported stolen.
Authorities said the occupants then fled the vehicle east into a nearby retention pond, where they were taken into custody.
Indiana State Police said a 19-year-old from Gary, an 18-year-old from Chicago, and three juveniles all face several charges, including felonies.
