KANKAKEE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An ice jam along the Kankakee River has caused flooding 50 miles from Chicago and authorities fear the worst is yet to come.
A large ice jam has formed along the river near Wilmington. It looks like a glacier. The ice becomes a dam, and the water spreads out.
Already, some areas have flooded, and homes, properties and vehicles are locked in ice.
Amy Phillips has lived along the river for 15 years. She told CBS-2 she has not seen it like this before.
"It's crazy," Phillips said. "It makes you think about how the glaciers came through."
There’s concern that homes could be taken by the river.
"River conditions will be unpredictable throughout the week, and we are advising residents along the river to be prepared for rapidly changing conditions,” said Allison Anderson, director of the Will County Emergency Management Agency.
