CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The National Weather Service is warning of possibly icy and dangerous conditions the next few days as a wintry mix of freezing drizzle and rain falls on the Chicago area.
A pair of Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for all area counties- Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, Will, McHenry, Kendall, and De Kalb-, the first in effect until noon today.
This morning, we’ll experience a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. The NWS says that it could produce a glaze of ice, creating potentially slippery, dangerous travel conditions. AccuWeather says streets and sidewalks could be icy.
By the afternoon, there will be a break in precipitation, the NWS notes.
Late tonight however, the sleet returns and will be intense at times.
As a result, a second Winter Weather Advisory is in place for all area counties, beginning at 9 p.m. tonight and in place until 9 a.m.
Tuesday’s morning commute could be treacherous, with slick conditions on area roads, bridges and overpasses.
As much as a quarter of an inch of ice could accumulate, the NWS says, with an inch of a snow/slush projected to fall.
The NWS cautions that ice accumulation is dependent on temperature. As of now, the NWS is forecasting temperatures to be right at or just below the freezing mark. But, there could be far less ice if temperatures end up just one degree above freezing.
This wet weather pattern will stick around the Chicago area until the end of the work week, AccuWeather says. Wednesday and Thursday, there will be periods of just plain rain, as temperatures will approach the 40s.
We won’t dry out, AccuWeather says, until Friday.
