(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Northwest Side Ald. Gilbert Villegas says he expects movement this month to test a program in which the city takes charge of clearing sidewalks of snow instead of building owners.
Villegas (36th) says unlike previous Mayor Lori Lightfoot, her successor Brandon Johnson is weighing the merits of the idea.
Under current law, people who don't shovel their sidewalks face fines, even if they are seniors or have a disability. If the snow's not cleared, people with disabilities and others can't get down the block.
Villegas wants to do a pilot program to test the city’s ability to do the job.
There could be a hearing next week.
