CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- We could know as early as next week what winter sports will look like for high school athletes in Illinois.
The Illinois High School Association board will meet next Wednesday to decide on sports seasons and schedules.
On Tuesday, the board approved via email a plan that allows winter sports competition, with the exception of boys and girls basketball, to begin seven days after the first practice.
The sports include badminton, boys swimming, boys and girls bowling, and girls gymnastics.
The Illinois Department of Public Health moved Chicago and most of the surrounding suburbs into Tier 2 on Monday, which allows for competition.
High schools in Will and Kankakee counties, however, would not get to compete at this point, because they’re still in Tier 3.
The IHSA also approved contact days for all fall, spring and summer sports, beginning Jan. 25.
The winter season originally was scheduled to run from Nov. 16 to Feb. 13, followed by the spring season Feb. 15 to May 1 and the summer season from April 19 to June 26.
