(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois and two surrounding states are part of the joint lawsuit against the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin are among the 33 states suing Meta in federal court in Northern California.

The states contend that Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, and Messenger violated consumer protection laws by unfairly ensnaring children and deceiving users about the safety of its platforms.

The states said Meta's algorithims were designed to push children and teenagers into harmful content. The suit also claims that features like infinite scroll and persistent alerts were used to hook younger users.

The states also charge the company with violating federal privacy laws for children.

Meta said it was working to provide a safer environment for teenagers on its apps and has introduced more than 30 tools to support teens and families.
