(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A new bill currently working its way through Springfield aims to address a rise in explicit photos generated by artificial intelligence, which have surfaced at some Illinois schools.
Lawmakers in the Illinois House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a plan to address the rise of deepfake images and A.I. generated nude photos of students.
“It has just just exploded, especially in the last few months,” said Illinois Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, one of the bill’s sponsors.
Yang Rohr, who represents Naperville and Warrenville, said the bill would update cyberbullying policies in schools to include A.I.-generated, deepfake nude photos.
“Especially for young people, you know, facing these things for the first time, it's good to be explicit in your direction in terms of what is expected,” she told WBBM.
The bill unanimously passed out of the Illinois House and now moves to the Senate.
“This bill is so important to me to make sure that our students are protected but to also make sure that they know what's expected of them, so that they can rise to the occasion and act how we want them to,” Yang Rohr said.
