CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Enrollment in the state’s community colleges declined for the fourth straight year but the Illinois Community College Board said it’s not all bad.

A report from the state Community College Board said the state’s two-year colleges as well as those nationwide “are still in a state of recovery.”

Nationally, enrollment is down 5.6%

In Illinois, the drop is 1.5%.

Among the City Colleges of Chicago the decrease is 8.6%.

That, after COVID-19 pandemic-related double-digit decreases in the fall of last year.

Only Kennedy King College in the Englewood neighborhood saw a slight increase.

The report said the declines are the smallest in a decade and more students are taking on-line classes and a higher percentage are graduating.

Out of 48 schools in Illinois, 17 saw increased enrollment.
