SPRINGFIELD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Department of Public Health on Sunday reported 4,062 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Illinois, including 24 additional confirmed deaths. More than 72,000 COVID-19 tests were reported in the past 24 hours, according to the IDPH.

Though lower than the 6,161 cases that set a new record for single-day coronavirus cases on Saturday, Sunday’s daily numbers were on trend as Illinois currently battles the second surge.

Half of Sunday’s confirmed deaths came from Cook County, the most populous county in the state. Cook County’s 12 deceased includes a man in his 20s, a man in his 40s, a man in his 60s, four women in their 70s, three women in their 80s and two men in their 80s.

Illinois currently has a total of 374,256 cases, including 9,505 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois.

The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from Oct. 18 – Oct. 24 is 6.1%.  Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 72,097 specimens for a total 7,268,952.

As of last night, 2,605 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19.  Of those, 565 patients were in the intensive care unit and 214 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

State health officials said Illinois and much of country are experiencing a second wave of novel coronavirus after bending the curve over the summer.

A two-week business curfew running from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. became effective Friday in Chicago for all non-essential businesses in an effort to mitigate the huge jump in cases. Restaurants may continue operating for take-out or delivery, but indoor or outdoor consumption of food or alcohol must cease at 10 p.m.

On Thursday, Mayor Lori Lightfoot asked all Chicagoans to refrain from gatherings of more than six people, as well as social gatherings of any sort after 10 p.m.
