The state of Illinois has reported a jump in its daily number of coronavirus cases.
The Illinois Department of Public Health on Thursday reported 2,056 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, including 25 additional deaths. It's the first time since Sept. 12 that the 24-hour tally of cases has exceeded 2,000.
Illinois has seesawed during the course of the viral pandemic. Its hospitals were in danger of being swamped by COVID-19 patients earlier this year, but by early July residents had helped "bend the curve" of new infections.
Then, the positivity rate — the percentage of tests coming back positive — was just over 2%.
As of Thursday, the rolling statewide positivity rate was 3.6%, which is still considered relatively low.
