(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Republicans in the Illinois House say the state's current legislative map is unconstitutional and illegally favors Democrats, and the GOP is asking the state's Supreme Court to intervene.
Republican State Representative Ryan Spain of Peoria accuses Democrats of using their control of state government to draw legislative district boundaries to illegally maximize Democratic support while diluting Republican votes.
Spain says in the 2024 election, Democrats got 55% of the statewide vote in Illinois House races, but won 66% of the seats.
"These elections for the legislature are rigged to ensure that they maintain power and control of the legislature, no matter what is happening in a given election."
Republican state lawmakers are asking the state Supreme Court to throw out the current legislative district map and create a new one that more fairly distributes Democratic and Republican voters.
"The current map is illegal and violates our constitutional requirements to have districts that are compact and districts that are free and equal and absent the use of partisan gerrymandering for the creation of legislative districts."
They also want an amendment to the Illinois Constitution creating an independent commission to draw state legislative district maps.
