(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The number of migrants crossing the southern border has risen in recent weeks, and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is now asking for help.
During an interview on Face the Nation, Pritzker said President Joe Biden needs to designate someone to lead the nation's efforts at the border.
"I hope that they will put one office together," he said. "I know the White House, right now, is coordinating it, but they need one office and, in my opinion, one person at the head of that office [who] we can call that we can work with to coordinate."
Pritzker also discussed his request for more federal assistance to help manage the influx of migrants to Chicago. He suggested that Biden needs to seize the moment, as the House of Representatives expected to vote for a new speaker this week.
"The House of Representatives is opposed to any kind of comprehensive immigration reform," the governor said. "It seems like now is the moment to talk about border security and immigration reform. We want immigrants in the United States. We also want border security. It seems like there's a compromise there."
With Chicago set to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Pritzker said he expects the city to have a better handle on its migrant situation — but he added that there will still be a need for help.
