CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — State health officials on Sunday reported 10,631 new cases COVID-19, including 72 additional deaths, in Illinois. More than 84,000 tests have been performed, about 30,000 less than the record-setting 114,370 performed on Saturday, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health,
Since the pandemic’s start, Illinois has had a total of 573,616 cases and 10,742 deaths, IDPH reported. As of Saturday night, 5,474 people were reported to be hospitalized with the coronavirus. Of those, 1,045 patients were in the intensive care unit and 490 patients were on ventilators.
The Chicago Department of Public Health reported a total of 132,728 total coronavirus cases and 3,190 total deaths in Chicago. The CDPH said 1,668,184 total coronavirus tests have been performed in the city.
These latest coronavirus numbers come ahead of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s stay-at-home advisory that’s set to go into effect Monday. Lightfoot said the advisory serves to encourage residents to say home as COVID-19 infection rates surge across the state.
“If we continue on the path we’re on ,and you and me and others don’t step up and do more, our estimates are that we could see a thousand more Chicagoans die from this virus by the end of the year,” Lightfoot said during a Thursday press conference.
