SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois House has advanced a bill imposing term limits on top leadership positions in both the state's House and Senate.

The bill, which passed the House unanimously, would set term limits for speaker and minority leader in the House and president and minority leader in the Senate to no more than 10 consecutive years.

The sponsor, state Rep. Anthony DeLuca, D-Chicago Heights, said it was a big moment for reform in the State of Illinois.

""What an honor to be the sponsor of this bill," he said. "The bill has about 62 co-sponsors. It is a significant structural reform here in the State of Illinois...This takes it to an entirely new level."

Among the co-sponsors was Illinois House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch, and without his support, DeLuca said, passing the term-limits bill “would not have happened.”

Illinois House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch, the first new speaker since 1983 after long-time speaker Mike Madigan stepped down, has supported term limits since he was elected.

The bill has “been a priority for the speaker since Day One, because he understands how important it is to build a bench for leadership positions in the General Assembly,” a spokeswoman for the speaker said.

The expected to pass the Illinois Senate, as well. If passed, the bill would take effect in January 2023.
