(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is warning about bird flu after large numbers of deaths in waterfowl across the state.

The DNR is monitoring what it calls a large event of waterfowl mortality at numerous locations throughout the state after getting test results for bird flu.

The City of Woodstock announced on Friday it had confirmed reports of geese, ducks or other waterfowl with the virus.

Natural Resources wants you to tell them or your local health department if you find five or more dead birds in one spot, but they don’t want you to take them for testing.

Anyone who has been exposed and develops symptoms of the flu –  fever, cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing, body aches, headaches, eye redness, vomiting or diarrhea – should again notify your local health officials and get treatment.

Last week, Wisconsin reported its first confirmed human case in a worker on a poultry farm.

"While avian influenza generally poses a low risk to the population, it is essential to take the necessary steps to avoid exposure, and to seek treatment quickly if you are exposed," said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Sameer Vohra in a press release.

"We encourage all Illinoisans to follow the advice of the experts at IDNR in order to avoid contact with sick birds, and to take any potential exposure seriously. These common-sense steps can help reduce the likelihood of spreading this illness."

There is also the risk of infection for other animals, so pets should be kept away from sick birds.

Hunters are also reminded to cook waterfowl to 165 degrees to ensure the meat is safe to eat.
