(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There's a House Committee hearing next week in Springfield about a proposal to lower the legal drinking age in Illinois from 21 to 18, with some restrictions.
A parent or guardian would have to be present for an 18-year-old to consume alcohol, and they would be allowed to do so in bars or restaurants.
Republican state Rep. John Cabello, a Rockford police detective, is proposing an amendment to the Liquor Control Act of 1934, an effort that failed to gain traction last year.
“Many 18-year-olds are already contributing members of society, working full-time jobs, attending college, and serving -- and in some cases dying for -- our country,” Cabello said in a prepared statement.
He adds that "by lowering the drinking age, we are acknowledging their maturity and ability to make responsible decisions."
Cabello says allowing some people under the age of 21 to drink alcohol may help reduce binge-drinking by minors by taking away some of the allure of booze.
