(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois elected officials are making a pitch to the federal government to locate a new health research agency in the Chicago area.
When President Biden signed legislation in March creating the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, or ARPA-H, he said it would be about exploring bold ideas.
The President wanted more than $6 billion for the agency, but Congress approved one billion.
The Chicago area is being touted by members of the Illinois congressional delegation as the agency seeks a home away from the National Institutes of Health.
"With a focus on equity, ARPA-H will support bold science and research that will push the bounds of innovation across healthcare and life sciences," said Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
Their pitch notes the leading research universities here, healthcare facilities, life sciences companies, talent and the central location.
