Lake County man hospitalized with COVID-19 could receive huge Christmas gift — new lungs

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Winthrop Harbor man who has been fighting COVID-19 since the summer could get the Christmas gift of a lifetime — a new set of lungs.

Matt LaPrade is at the top of the transplant list for a double-lung transplant, his girlfriend Tara Losch said.

The 46-year-old has been at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee since mid-September. Before that, she told CBS 2 Chicago he was on a ventilator at another hospital.

“He fought hard. He never gave up. H just kept going,” Losch said.

She said LaPrade was unvaccinated when he caught COVID-19 in August but they thought he was low risk.

“He didn’t have any underlying issues. He worked out everyday. He ate healthy,” Losch continued.

His story has persuaded others to get vaccinated and Lush said she has great sympathy for anyone with loved ones in the hospital on Christmas with COVID-19.
