Illinois pork producers have donated a million pounds of processed meat to the state’s nine regional food banks over the past 15 years. Organizations are expressing their appreciation for that effort - while also noting that more help is always needed.
People are food insecure year-round, not just this time of year. Tim Kirsininkas of the Central Illinois Food Bank said cash donations go along long way.
"Nearly every dollar that's donated to the food bank can help us procure up to six meals for our neighbors. So $5 can provide up to 30 meals," Kirsininkas said.
The food bank here serves 21 counties, but the Illinois Pork Producers Association’s Pork Power program is a statewide program with nine food banks served.
