CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The FBI has reportedly sent warnings to state officials across the country that far-right groups may be staging armed protests outside all 50 state capitols ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s Jan. 20 inauguration in Washington.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signaled Monday that law enforcement is ready for potential trouble at the state capital amid continuing chaos in Washington, and praised his state security team: the heads of the Illinois National Guard, the state emergency management agency, and Illinois State Police.
“The ISP is quite well aware of the challenges that may crop up,” Pritzker said Monday. “We have a great security team for the state.”
In a statement, state police said they “are tracking possible events at the Illinois Capitol building this weekend.”
The ISP said they “remain vigilant in our mission to protect the safety of those engaged in the process of democracy, constitutional rights and public institutions.”
Besides ISP, the Illinois National Guard and the state’s emergency management agency are also on alert.
Pro-Trump demonstrators marched on Washington Jan. 6. The demonstration devolved into a mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol. At least five people died, including a Capitol police officer who engaged the unruly crowd.
