(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Illinois government is taking more steps to make abortions and other reproductive health care more accessible to women.
At a news conference Monday at University of Illinois-Chicago, Gov. JB Pritzker said his administration is teaming up with hospitals other health care providers and advocates to help women navigate systems and reduce costs for patients at a time when other states have restricted or outlawed abortions.
Part of the initiative is a new hotline called CARLA, the Complex Abortion Regional Line for Access. It will help people seeking care for complicated cases and link them with financial help for transportation and daycare, says Theresa Eagleson of the Department of Healthcare and Family Services.
In addition, Pritzker said, there will be a family planning program for Medicaid and a grant program for reproductive healthcare providers facing high demand for services.
Many of the programs will benefit women who live in Illinois and those who are coming here from other states for abortion services, officials said.
