(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The head of the Illinois State Police says one year after efforts began to reduce gun violence on Chicago-area expressways, the numbers show the plan is working well.
ISP Director Brendan Kelly said over the past year, the number of shootings has dropped by 42 percent, while the number of homicides is down 82 percent.
He said that follows a rise in the numbers of guns seized and high-level felony arrests, as well as a decrease in the number of calls the state police have received about gun crimes along expressways.
Kelly told state troopers that their increased expressway patrols are one reason why.
