(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Tollway is offering incentives to get more low-income drivers signed up for I-PASS. The move comes a year after the tollway went to permanent cashless toll collection.

The tollway is waiving fees and fines for some low-income drivers. The interim executive director said the changes are aimed at helping those who can least afford it from carrying those burdens.

Those who join the more than 5,000 drivers who have already signed up for I-PASS assist will get a $20 dollar gift card and won’t have to put down a deposit on a transponder.

The tollway plans to work with other agencies to find those who qualify, which for a single person, means earning not more than $32,000 dollars per year.
