The driver of a stolen pickup truck was found shot dead hours after allegedly shooting a state trooper multiple times following a traffic stop that led to a pursuit which ended at a Michigan City, Ind. gas station Friday morning.

The driver was found with gunshot wounds sometime after 10:30 a.m. near Joliet and Wozniak roads near Westville where the Ford was found after the shooting, Indiana state police said at a news conference. It wasn’t immediately clear how the driver was shot.

The incident began about 5:30 a.m. when the Berrien County, Mich. sheriff’s department began pursuing a vehicle they believed to be stolen, state police said.

The chase led into northwest Indiana where the driver escaped Berrien authorities and a state trooper spotted the vehicle, a Ford F-150, on I-94, officials said. They tried to pull the Ford over but it fled and troopers gave chase, state police said.

The chase ended at a Speedway, 2884 US-421 in Michigan City, where the driver of the pickup shot a trooper multiple times, state police said.

The trooper was taken to Franciscan Health and transferred to a hospital in South Bend Memorial Hospital where he was in surgery, officials said. His condition was stabilized and he was said to be “in good spirits.”
