(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As we await new guidance from the CDC about the best kinds of masks to protect against the Omicron variant of coronavirus, a local doctor offers some suggestions.

Masks with layers provide the best protection, said Dr. Robert Citronberg, executive medical director of infectious disease and prevention for Advocate Aurora Health.

The gold standard, of course, is the N95 mask used by medical professionals as they treat COVID patients.

But if those are not available, the KN95 mask is a good option.

“The key is to wear a good quality mask and make sure it fits well around your mouth and your nose,” Citronberg said.

He said Advocate Aurora has had the most patients in its hospitals since start of the pandemic – more than 1,700 – but they’re starting to see that leveling off.

After a pause, he said Advocate’s clinics are again offering infusions of the monoclonal antibodies that work well against Omicron.
