(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Indiana wants to help improve its students' reading test scores. They're planning on spending more the 100 million dollars on the initiative.

Governor Eric Holcomb said the state will allocate $111 million in total funding toward the initiative with more than half of the money coming from Lilly Endowment, an Indianapolis-based philanthropy, according to the Associated Press.

The effort to improve children's reading proficiency comes amid concerns about modest and unequal literacy rates among Indiana's young students.

Recent I-READ test results show that reading levels among the state's young students are at about an 82 percent pass rate.

The state wants to raise that figure to at least 95 percent. The rates are significantly lower among students of color.
