Portage, Indiana man arrested after three hour standoff with police

Portage Police say a woman who escaped to a neighbor's house reported that her brother, 39-year-old Charles Murphy, attacked her, broke her phone and threatened to shoot anyone who came to the house.

It happened around 9:40am Saturday at a home on Dutch Mill Street near Mill Run Avenue in Portage, Indiana.

Portage Police say a woman who escaped to a neighbor's house reported that her brother, 39-year-old Charles Murphy, attacked her, broke her phone and threatened to shoot anyone who came to the house.

When officers arrived, they say Murphy threatened to shoot them and could be seen placing a shotgun and ammunition on the ledge of a second floor window.

SWAT Team members deployed a chemical agent and made entrance through the front door.

Murphy was arrested after being shot with a less-than-lethal projectile.  Police say following his arrest, officers found a twelve-gauge shotgun, a sword, and five large knives, in the house, as well as extra ammunition in various locations on the second floor. Murphy is now facing several charges including with three felonies.

His sister was treated at the scene, but refused to go to a hospital.
