NDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — There is no longer a fee to obtain a lifetime permit to carry a gun in the state of Indiana and the response has bogged down the Indiana State Police firearms licensing website.
"Within the first 24 hours, we received 7,136 applications," Sgt. John Perrine with the Indiana State Police told CBS 4 in Indianapolis.
Perrine said the application surge was not unexpected since the $125 fee was dropped.
Gun shop manager Luke Surface told CBS 4 business is booming and has been for a couple of years.
"A lot of people have already purchased their handgun in lieu of the fee being free,” Surface said.
He suggested spending the money saved on a safety course.
“And then you can put it towards training, education, especially if it's your first gun. That's something that's really important,” Surface said.
There are still costs associated with fingerprinting and background checks and the state police are asking that applicants for permits be patient.
