16-year-olds in Indiana can soon celebrate their birthdays by getting their driver’s licenses.
Gov. Mike Braun signed a law eliminating the additional 90 days they had to wait before getting their license, saying it gives families more flexibility.
As of July 1, Hoosiers can get licensed if they pass the written, driving and vision tests, plus meet other requirements.
Those include finishing driver’s ed, have a learners permit for 180 days and show a log of 50 hours of supervised driving.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says car crashes are one of the leading causes of death for older teens - with more than 2300 people killed in teen driving crashes in 2024.
