(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is working to reintroduce a freshwater species to the area.
The DNR says nearly half of Indiana's native freshwater mussel species are either already gone from the state or are listed as endangered species, due in part to alterations to waterways and pollution.
The department is addressing this by augmenting existing populations and re-introducing mussels into areas they used to exist. The agency will monitor the effort over the next several years.
The DNR says freshwater mussels are indicators of healthy water quality and are an important source of food for many fish, mammals, and birds.
