(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Lake County man remains behind bars after he allegedly choked and beat a woman while aboard his boat Monday night.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said 41-year-old Douglas J. Johnson, of Ingleside, has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery, two counts of domestic battery, and one count of unlawful restraint. A 40-year-old woman made a distressing 9-1-1 call at around 9 p.m., arguing could be heard on the line and the call was traced to Columbia Bay, which is just of Fox Lake, Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said.
Sheriff’s deputies responded and found a single boat in the water. Covelli said when deputies came to the boat the woman came rushing out of the downstairs cabin area and on to the deck. The woman was in tears and appeared visibly injured, Covelli said.
Sheriff deputies said the woman was an acquaintance of Johnson’s and she had asked Johnson to bring her back to shore and let her off the boat, so she could return to her family. Hearing this, Johnson became furious and elbowed the woman in the nose and choked her with his hands.
Johnson was arrested while on the boat, Covelli said.
A Lake County judge set his bail at $500,000 and, as of Tuesday afternoon, remained in Lake County jail, having to post $50,000 cash bail in order to be released before his trial.
