CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The owners of a sprawling subsidized housing complex that went on the market last month in the Woodlawn neighborhood have some work to do following two days of inspections.
Alderman Jeanette Taylor asked the city’s Department of Buildings to look into numerous complaints at the nearly 700-unit complex on the South Side.
Inspectors spent two days there, finding more than 50 building code violations, rodents, malfunctioning elevators, missing screens, and broken windows.
Owner Related Midwest told the Chicago Sun-Times it has spent millions over the past 10 years there and said the code violations are being addressed.
Because it's subsidized housing guaranteeing affordable rent, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development would have to sign off on a sale.
Parkway Gardens runs from 63rd to 65th streets between King Drive and Calumet Avenue. A number of rappers who went on to find fame grew up there.
