Investigators share cause of death for hate crime suspect

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Officials have released the cause of death for a man who was accused of a hate crime in West Ridge.

A hate crime suspect in West Ridge died by suicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Autopsy results determined that on November 30, 22-year-old Sidi Mohammad Abdullahi was found unresponsive after he hanged himself in his cell. He was at Cermak Health Services where he was being treated for injuries he received in a shootout with police.

Abdullahi was accused of shooting and wounding a Jewish man walking to a synagogue on October 26, 2024 in a targeted attack before getting into a shootout with police.

An immigrant from northwest Africa, Abdullahi faced hate crime charges as well as attempted murder.
