CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Iowa fans had fun in River North Sunday afternoon watching the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship game but went home disappointed after Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes fell to South Carolina.
There were cheers with every Iowa basket and even louder roars when it was a three pointer from Cailtin Clark. But, for the hundreds Iowa fans at Theory, an Iowa bar on Hubbard near State, the end was deflating as the Hawkeyes fell.
Despite the defeat, there’s still much to look forward to.
“Not only Iowa alone, but LSU, South Carolina having those star players, especially being so dynamic and so explosive, I think that they are really paving a way for women’s basketball and women’s sports in general,” said Jasmine Shakir, a 2020 Iowa graduate.
Debra Rahn-Oakes was among the hundreds at Theory and said that even though Iowa lost, there is still much to be proud of.
“I think without a doubt this is the time for all women’s sports,” Rahn-Oakes said. “Caitlin Clark has just propelled women’s sports altogether, not just basketball.”
