Despite the cooler weather, tick season is underway in Illinois.

The DuPage Forest Preserve District is offering some ways to stay safe. To avoid deadly tick borne illnesses, officials tell The Sun Times people should stay out of tall grassy areas and wooded areas with a lot of leaves on the ground.

The Illinois Department of Public Health also recommends wearing long clothing and applying insect repellent with at least 10% DEET.

If you are bitten by a tickets that's removing as quickly as possible. Most tick borne diseases don't transmit unless they've been attached for four or more hours.
