(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A professor of meteorology at Northern Illinois University says signs point toward an active tornado season for this part of the country.

You may still see snow slowly melting on your parkway, but coming down the pike in a couple of weeks — perhaps — are the risk of tornadoes.

"We're going to see a lot more tornado news headlines as we progress through March," predicts Dr. Victor Gensini, associate professor of meteorology at NIU.

He said La Niña is behind this. The Pacific Ocean is colder than normal near the equator, and that sets up the jet-stream winds to produce warmer weather over the eastern two-thirds of the United States.

Gensini says now is a good time to prepare. In fact, this is the beginning of Severe Weather Preparedness Week.

Gensini is the guest this week on a National Weather Service webinar on severe weather. To register, go here.
