(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Gov. J.B. Pritzker called Vice President Kamala Harris "the most qualified and capable person to be president" as he endorsed her after President Joe Biden bowed out of the race over the weekend.

The governor said "it's past time" that the country shatters what he called the "highest and hardest of glass ceilings and finally elect a woman as president."

In his statement, Pritzker said he spoke to Harris in the wake of Biden's decision to step aside — a decision that Pritzker said was a genuine surprise to him.

Pritzker was among several people who had been considered as a potential presidential candidate, and many of those leaders have also endorsed Harris. Among them: Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

More than 700 pledged delegates have told the Associated Press or announced that they plan to support Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention. That number would be more than one-third of the pledged delegates she needs in order to clinch the nomination.

The Illinois governor said he has spent hours talking to fellow Democratic leaders about a road to victory and is aware of the unique role the state will play as host to the Democratic National Convention in four weeks.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
