CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Despite high temperatures and smog in Chicago, the lakefront was full of joggers pushing through the heat.

"I don't know if it's I'm out of shape or the fact that it is a little smoggy out but I do feel like it's a little harder to breathe, especially with the heat on top of that," said Meredith Tunney.

It'll take more than a little heat and haze to stop Chicago's joggers, especially Sylvie of Lincoln Park, who said getting some outside time is vital.

"I need to be outside. I know the condition is not great, but I'm thinking I'm close to the lake," she said. "It's a big lake, so maybe the weather is better here, and it's just my way to start my day, and I do it anyway."

Tina is visiting from St. Louis with a friend and said running has always been a huge part of their lives.

"It's a way to get outdoors, to do something for ourselves, to reconnect with nature, even if the air quality isn't great, and we are aware of that," she explained. "But if we didn't get out there on days like today, we wouldn't be able to get out there for many months."

She and Sylvie said they are keeping cool, wearing hats, taking breaks, and drinking plenty of water.
