CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — John's Pizzeria Restaurant and Lounge has been a family-owned fixture on Western Avenue in Bucktown for over 65 years. On Sunday, though, the owner announced that the pizzeria would close at the end of June.
The "John" of John's Pizzeria was John Imburgia, who came to Chicago as a young man from a small town in Sicily in the late 1940s. He met a girl here, whose family was from his hometown. They got married and started a family.
Then, in 1957, Imburgia opened his pizza place.
“He said he thought that was his ticket to success,” said John’s son, Larry Imburgia.
Larry, who’s now the owner, recently posted the news to Facebook. “We lost our lease.”
In the post, Imburgia wrote that they’ve loved “hosting all your birthdays, graduations and celebrations over the decades.”
As it turns out, his sister is the landlord. Imburgia was asked if he was upset with her. His response: “No.”
"She's my sister,” he said. “She's the only one I have left in my immediate family. My brother's gone. My father. My mother. My younger sister. It's just me and her."
Imburgia said his sister is selling the building at Western Avenue and Charleston Street — and he said he's paid his dues.
Patrons will still be able to order one last pizza, half-baked pies and other Italian specialties through June 30.
“Thanks for all the memories,” Imburgia wrote.
