(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Brandon Johnson says his office is looking into reports that raise questions about the residency of his top adviser, Jason Lee.
The Chicago Tribune reported that mayoral senior adviser, Jason Lee voted as a Texas resident last month, but the City of Chicago requires its employees to be city residents.
Lee told the Tribune, he kept his Texas voter registration so that he could vote for his sister, Erica Lee Carter in a special election to complete the unfinished term of their late mother, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
Mayor Johnson has now responded to questions about that situation.
"Look, this is a matter that is being looked into. As you know, this is a personal element and you know, I don't discuss those type of personal dynamics publicly."
He defended Lee's work as a champion for working people and he sidestepped talk about the optics of a Chicago official who doesn't vote here.
"This is a personal matter that is being looked into and as that information continues to unfold, then conclusions can be drawn and I'm happy to respond to them once a full diagnostic is done."
