JOLIET, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Despite many residents' opposition Tuesday night, the Joliet City Council gave its approval to a plan for a developer to continue plans for a truck and warehouse logistics site.

The Joliet City Council voted to allow NorthPoint to develop the first 532 acres of its planned Third Coast Intermodal Hub, which will have semi-trucks coming and going to warehouses. Area resident Michelle Peterson was among those speaking out against the plan.

"The taxpayers will be on the hook for years to come for this project with little to show except for destroying the area and making it unsafe for the people around it." she said.

"It will not be a money-maker for Joliet. It will be a leech sucking us dry for their profit."

Stephanie Irvin also urged a “no” vote.

"Our general welfare, health, livelihood with our family business, property value, quality of life, our personal safety as we travel are all at stake and will be irreparably harmed if the Third Coast NorthPoint project is approved," she said.

Meanwhile, the Joliet Council rejected a proposal by another developer, CenterPoint, to develop hundreds more acres on its intermodal site.
