(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Joliet Township leaders on Friday said they will no longer pursue a $8.6 million grant to provide services to asylum seekers.

The announcement comes two weeks after Joliet city officials said they weren’t aware of the township’s plans. Joliet Mayor Terry D'Arcy opposed the idea, as did Will County Board Chairwoman Judy Ogalla.

Earlier this week, hundreds of residents spoke against the idea at a public meeting.

D'Arcy on Friday said the township's reversal will allow governmental and social agencies to work together to help people currently living in Will County.
