Joliet worker killed after falling down elevator shaft, police say

JOLIET (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred Wednesday afternoon at a business in Joliet.

It happened at a custom woodworking business a 225 Maple Street. Police arrived to find a badly injured man in an elevator shaft.

Employees were on the second floor moving cabinets out of an elevator.

Police said it started moving upward while the doors were stuck open by the cabinets.

They said “it is believed” that the 23-year-old man “attempted to escape from the rising elevator and became caught between the elevator floor and the second-floor ceiling before falling into the shaft.”

Police rendered first-aid before paramedics arrived. The man was taken to Silver Cross Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He's identified as Agustin Martinez-Gallegos.

Police said his death is believed to be accidental.
